MEMBERS of a music orchestra are gearing up for a gig at the Redgrave Theatre.

The Ukulele Funhouse Orchestra – otherwise known as UFO – is a dedicated band of ukulele players from across North Somerset.

Formed just under a year ago they have played a string of concerts at many of the region's most prestigious venues – including Bristol's Colston Hall and Clevedon Pier.

Audiences have been wowed by the 20-strong group's renditions of classic songs including ones from the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner and the Beatles.

Last month the ukulele was officially named as the most popular instrument in Britain. A favourite with both adults and kids it now even outstrips the recorder as the instrument of choice for children.

The UFO also boasts as one of its members the National President of the Ukulele Society of Great Britain. Malcolm Atkins from Nailsea, who joined last year.

Mr Atkins said: "I've been playing a ukulele for many years, and sold one to George Harrison a few years back. I'm discovering a whole new range of music playing with the orchestra. They are a treat to see and hear."

UFO play at the Redgrave Theatre at Clifton College on October 5. Tickets are £8 from the Tobacco Factory.
