The Bristol Post

At Christmas, my cousin, who lives in Bristol, sent me your article in The Post asking for memories of the Royal Hotel.

I have fond memories of the Royal. As a student, I walked past it every day on my way to college in Great George Street. The hotel always struck me as being so elegant, with its central entrance and bay windows on either side. The statue of Queen Victoria standing in front also added to the scene.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would get to see inside the place where Cary Grant always stayed while visiting his mother in Bristol! But my dream did come true on May 7, 1960, when my husband and I held our wedding reception there following our marriage at St Mary Redcliffe church.

The staff at the hotel made our day a truly unforgettable one.

We had a sherry reception followed by a superb luncheon in the ballroom. After lunch we were even given the use of one of the delightful rooms overlooking College Green, in which to change prior to our departure for Temple Meads station and a honeymoon in the Isles of Scilly.

I am enclosing a copy of the luncheon menu and photos taken in the ballroom. By the way, the Bristol Evening Post took our wedding photographs! My husband and I have been married for almost 53 years now and we did return to the Royal Hotel in 2000 to celebrate our Ruby wedding anniversary.

The hotel was then owned, I believe, by the Swallow group. Of course, it was very much larger than we remembered, but still a wonderful place to stay.

We wish the Marriott Royal every success in the future.
