Unemployment down in Bristol area
NEARLY 22,000 people are still looking for work in Bristol and the surrounding area - despite a slight improvement in the unemployment rate.
Figures released by the government today show that, across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset, 21,578 people were claiming jobseekers allowance last month, down 392 on August's total of 21,970.
In Bristol the number of people out of work and claiming benefit was 12,393 in September, down from 12,500 the previous month.
South Gloucestershire saw a fall in the number of jobseekers allowance claimants from 3,770 in august to 3,660 last month.

In North Somerset the number fell from 3,311 to 3,208, while in Bath & North East Somerset there was a decrease from 2,389 to 2,317.

“Note: you have to be both "out of work" AND "claiming benefit". So, if you're doing one of these courses for unemployed people, doing "work experience" or have been "sanctioned" for breaking one of the increasingly confusing and target-driven JCP conditions for claiming benefit, you're excluded from these figures. "Lies, damned lies and statistics."”
