Tuck and Sparks strike again in sidecar nationals
Compton Greenfield sidecar trial aces Jon Tuck and Matt Sparks clinched their second consecutive British title in the West of England club's national event at Ashburton.
In a total of 39 sections in six main groups on the lower slopes of Dartmoor they lost 30 marks fewer than their closest rivals for the title, Kevin Nolan and Karl Jarvis. Sparks father, Phillip, partnered by Tuck's elder brother, Roger, finished second in the intermediate class in a close finish where the top three were separated by three marks.
Plymouth Devis speedway captain Seemond Stephens and Gary Davey were easy winners of the newcomers award in their first year in the premier league.
Tuck and Sparks outshone their rivals in the title class at the Millwood, Hound Tor and Hedge Barton sections, but gained most at Decoaker where they lost just one mark to Nolar and Jarvis' 13.
Sheffield veteran Dave Thorpe was an eight mark winner of the pre-1975 solo class while a tie break gave Phill Wiffen the edge over Chris Koch in the twin shock class after both had finished on eight mark totals.
South West area solo champion Joe Baker repeated last year's experts class, British championships win in the final round of the series at Skyrakes Farm, Yorkshire.
In three laps of 12 sections he lost 20 marks less than his closest rival Jack Challoner, and he took the title by an 11 point margin.
There was a much closer result in the main championship where Graham Jarvis finished a single point up on Michael Brown. Both were decisively beaten by former World Kingpin Dougie Lampkin, but Jarvis' second place, albeit by two marks, paid dividends.
Locally, Wessex Centre timed trial champion Shane Lovatt gained a 25 mark win over Paul Manning in the BSSA's Alan Brown trophy series event at Hanham Mills. Thirty-five took part in the seven lap event in wet and miserable conditions.
Lovat was first to finish and he lost less than runner up Paul Manning on observation.
Craig Talbot won the Wilts Border club's Endeavour observation only trial at Stanton St Quinton where the field faced four laps of eight sections.
It was wet, windy and cold at Westonzoyland for the NSAS quarter-mile sprint meeting, but despite a head wind Keith Parnell returned a terminal speed of 157 mph in winning the unlimited class in the racing-class section.
Barry Varndell had a slightly faster time in winning the super street class in the road legal section, but he also had a lower terminal speed.
