A shopkeeper has accused police of failing to act swiftly enough to catch thieves who raided his store during a fundraising march.

Scores of people taking part in the walk in memory of hit-and-run victim Troy Atkinson stole hundreds of pounds of sweets and drinks from Steven Metcalfe's Spar shop in Bedminster earlier this month.

Mr Metcalfe said up to 50 of the marchers, some wearing RIP Troy T-shirts, walked into his shop and helped themselves to drinks, sweets, crisps and chocolates.

The incident happened as more than 300 people wound their way from Castle Gate, where 15-year-old Troy was knocked down, to his Hartcliffe home. He died later in Frenchay Hospital. The march was held to help raise money for his funeral.

Mr Metcalfe, 33, who runs the Spar shop in Parson Street, said although he has handed in CCTV images of the shoplifters to the police, nothing has been done since the thefts on May 5.

Amongst the stock stolen were ice lollies, cans of Foster's lager, a bottle of Stella Artois, a bottle of Blackthorn, a bottle of Budweiser, two bottles of water, two cans of Cola, toilet rolls, tins of spaghetti, boxes of cakes and Pringles.

Mr Metcalfe said: "We are still waiting for statements to be taken from staff.

"Do the police expect my staff to remember every detail of what happened if they don't take statements from them for two or three weeks?

"By now a few people should have been arrested over this. I've written to my MP Dawn Primarolo and she has replied saying she is investigating my complaint."

Wayne Baker, spokesman for Avon & Somerset police, said: "We have made appointments to take statements from members of staff and the neighbourhood beat manager has spoken to the shop manager. CCTV footage has been seized and we will be looking at that."
