Trollope: Goals will come for Duffy and Kuffour
Paul Trollope remains convinced that goals will come for Bristol Rovers strikers Jo Kuffour and Darryl Duffy.
Though the Pirates have relied on in-form marksman Rickie Lambert for more than half of their 29 league goals so far, the first-team coach believes it won't be long before the other members of his strikeforce get in on the act on a regular basis.
Lambert has led the way with 15 goals so far, while Duffy has three and Kuffour one – but Trollope believes the two new recruits have still been turning in promising performances.
"We are pleased with the additions we have made. We knew it would take time with one or two of them because of previous injuries or lack of games, but now I think we are starting to see the real players come through," he said.
"Rickie's had the headlines because he's scored the goals – he's on fire and long may that continue. But we have had a few good team performances recently as well as individual ones.
"Both Jo and Darryl will be disappointed not to have got on the scoresheet in recent weeks, although chances have been there for them.
"I think that maybe the difference is just having a wee bit of confidence. They are taking an extra touch at times to try and make sure, whereas Rickie is being bold with things because his confidence is so high.
"But I'm confident goals will come for them because they are both quality strikers."
Rovers will be looking to extend a seven-game unbeaten run at Leicester City on Saturday and Trollope says he is happy that the players now more look comfortable with the change in formation that has helped to spark a turnaround in form.
Though the ploy of using Stuart Campbell as a buffer just in front of the back four had an immediate impact in terms of tightening things up defensively, Trollope believed it would take a few games before the players adopted to it in an attacking sense.
"I'm pleased with how the system is evolving now," said Trollope.
"We said when we introduced it that it would take time for individuals to get used to their roles and responsibilities and now it seems to be working better, especially at home.
"In the past, when we've played 4-4-2, we have not got up to the ball in our half and allowed the opposition too much time. But for an hour against Southend on Saturday our midfield trio were right on top of their opponents and we were winning the ball back early.
"We won a lot of tackles and a lot of headers during that time – probably more than we have for quite a while – and that gave us a forward impetus. We played some of our best football of season in first hour.
"We were disappointed not to keep a clean sheet against Southend, but even after they scored we got to grips with the game again and could have had two or three more goals."
Rovers will hand outings to full-backs Ryan Green and Joe Jacobson in a reserve team friendly at Exeter City's training ground today. Both players have only recently returned from injuries.
