Tributes have been paid to a popular member of staff at St Katherine's School who died suddenly.

Steve Webb, a parent support adviser at the school in Ham Green, near Pill, North Somerset, died on February 28, following a suspected heart attack.

Mr Webb, who was married to Joy and lived in Radstock, had been unwell and at the time of his death was on sick leave.

Mr Webb, aged 44, joined St Katherine's School in 2007 and was one of two parent support advisers on the staff.

Before working at St Katherine's he held a number of roles in Bristol schools, more recently as a learning mentor at Portway School and a home link worker at Withywood Community School.

Staff and students were gathered together on Monday afternoon and told of Mr Webb's death.

A book of condolence has been opened and students have made a special card which is available for those who worked most closely with him to write their personal messages in.

Letters were also being sent home to parents on Friday informing them of Mr Webb's death.

St Katherine's School head teacher, Stephanie Quayle, paid tribute to Mr Webb, saying he was a highly valued member of staff.

Ms Quayle said: "Staff, students, parents and governors are all deeply saddened to learn of Steve's sudden death.

"He was so important to so many young people at St Katherine's, many of whom have shed lots of tears this week and are feeling rather lost without him.

"He was a big man, with a gentle presence and a thoughtful and caring approach.

"He related exceptionally well to young people and their parents had great confidence in him.

"Nothing was ever too much trouble for Steve, he would drop everything to support a child, to listen to a parent or help a colleague.

"He will be sorely missed by us all.

"Our thoughts and prayers are very much with his wife Joy and his family."

The school is planning to pay a formal tribute to Mr Webb with his family in the summer term.

“Steve worked at Portway before St Catherines and he made a huge difference to a lot of peoples lives.

Both him and Joy ran the Summer club at Portway and it was a pleasure to know such a caring and wonderful man. You will be missed Steve.
