I feel I must write in reply to 'Let's Nail the Cats for Trespassing'.

Some time ago someone wrote in your paper from Brislington stating if cats should come on to your garden or get into your house you should be able to shoot them.

How people keep these smelly horrible pets I don't know. They mess anywhere and kill our birds. If you should be unlucky to go into someone's house who have cats (sometimes they have more than one) the smell stays on your clothes. In fact I have been sick when I go home.

Come on people, it is time that a law is passed so that cats trespassing on private land were rounded up and destroyed. The sooner the better.

Alan, Brislington.

“Sounds like you could do with looking down 2 metal holes, where is your soul? People like you with 0 empathy for animals perturb me deeply, how far out of touch from your core self can you be, you are indeed a mammal yourself.
I'm sure though barely trained enough as one to use human facilities, have you really thought your post through?”

“For goodness sake... what ridiculous comments on here from unhinged cat haters

I get annoyed when birds poop on my car windscreen - shall I shoot them? Or when dogs bark incessantly at night - shall I shoot them? Or when rubbish parents can't control their wild children - shall I shoot them?”

“Sane, how about a tax on dog food too so that the council can clear up their poop when their owners can't be bothered to clear that up? Simple Solution really, don't complain about cats, before you think about dog owners too.
Casual dad - Lemon juice or any other organic strong smelling food stuffs, even an oil like lemongrass will deter cats, don't think i would be too happy if my cat got blinded by washing up liquid, although i agree that a high pressure water pistol is very effective and non harming towards any cats who come into your garden.
Feline Angry, i can understand your plight that you obviously dislike cats, i personally do not like dogs, and to have to walk up a communal driveway dodging doggy do when i know that has not been my cat (certainly waay too large!), but i'm also thankful that if my cat was to stay into your garden and you were to take them to the local cat charity it will promptly be returned to me, as they are microchipped. I just feel that people have far too much time on their hands worrying who or what comes into their garden. If someone wants to throw excrement at my front door then that is fine, but the police will be involved, as they cannot confirm if it was indeed one of my cats that did it, nor that of any of the other dozen cats in the local area, i can just imagine it now, someone walking the streets with a bag of poo throwing it at doors just becuase it's THEIR choice to own a cat.
Please people put this to rest, i respect peoples opinion but to slander them as to their own choices is just a bit too sad.
what's next?! people complaining that fat people take up 2 seats on the bus?! please....”

“I found a sonic cat scarer very effective but why should I incur the cost of this? How about a tax on cat food so that anyone who wants a free cat scarer can have one, paid for by the cat owners?”

“Until several irresponsible people in our locality decided to get themselves one of these lovable but horrible creatures, we did not realise what a disgusting smell, awful mess, and personal upset is caused when one's garden, especially in the vicinity of the back door is used as a toilet by these animals! Already, I can hear the howls of outrage now I've used the term 'irresponsible'. Yes, all you cat owners who have not educated your animals into using a cat-lit box on your own property ARE irresponsible, and i'll spell it out for you in case you didn't get it into your heads the first time - IRRESPONSIBLE! I'm sure that if I let my offspring loose to use the gardens in the locality as a toilet, similar howls of 'irresponsible parent' would be echoing around the neighbourhood in no time. For Caroline of Thornbury, it definitely is not 'probably a fox anyway', and for Mike of Bristol, I stand up and applaud you for returning the substance from whence it came; I admire your restraint in not returning it by other means! If anyone can recommend a sensible and humane low/nil cost of keeping these animals off our flower beds I would be most grateful, because consider this - I am not going to use my money to pay for someone elses creature to keep off my property! And also consider this - I agree that by law, these animals cannot be prevented from entering your garden, but, if I catch one then it will be treated as a stray and action taken accordingly. And if this means taking it to a cats home where it will have to be kept until claimed ( by irresponsible cat owners? - I think not!) at cat lovers' expense, then so be it!”

“Are you frickin kidding me?!?! You want to pass a law that says that anyone can shoot and kill or horribly mame another persons beloved pet because they went in your garden?!?! WTF?!? I am absolutely digusted you selfish small minded people! I have 2 cats myself, both are loving companions which bring me a lot of love and happiness, they are more than cats they are part of my family and if anyone shot one of them they'd have a helluva lot more than cat poo to worry about, i would make it my personal mission to make their life/lives hell and i would not stop until i had made them pay! When that cat was cruelly shot with a crossbow and slowly died in agony everyone was outraged, but now suddenly its ok for this kind of animal cruelty to occur?? Wake up you total neanderthals, these are not just stray animals that cannot feel pain, these are intelligent living creatures and are members of peoples families!!! Grrrrrr!!!!”

“There's no need to shoot the cats, well not in the conventional sense.

All you need is a water pistol (preferably high pressure) filled with water and some washing up liquid (I find Fairy works best). Aim and fire at the cat, they will run away. When they try and clean themselves with their tongues they will only succeed in creating foam and bubbles, trust me they won't come back in your garden.

Efficient and hilarious, can you tell im not a cat person? : )”

“I cant believe I have ended up using my time to read this or respond- but I can't believe that people do not have bigger issues in their life rather than where cats poo. For the bird lovers out there I hate how birds shit on my car so is it possible for a law to shoot birds also, as it seems some people find it acceptable to shoot animals they do not like in our world.”

“If you go to peoples houses who have cats and you dont' like them, why don't you invite your friends to your house?! we always check with people entering our house if they are ok with cats, if they are not, then we shut them into one of the rooms until they leave.
As for shooting them, i agree a super soaker is better, as i certainly would not think kindly of my cats being killed just so someone can have a pristine garden!!! cats are generally clean animals, and by law you cannot stop them entering your garden as they are roaming animals, dogs on the other hand if they enter your garden then you can do whatever you want to get them out. the poo that you are probably experiencing (and smelling) is more likely to be Foxes poo. Strong smelling plants, orange or onion peel and cat deterants are either free or low cost and would deter animals from your garden.
And I agree I would recomend that you go to the docs if you are sick after being close to animals, there may be deep down problems which requires you to write to the papers about your dislike of animals! I have lots of complain about but it doens't mean that i would necessarily waste paper and resources and paper space on voicing my dislike to animals.
but then again each to their own.....
Mike, surely you are just wasting valuable energy going out of your way to throw poo into neighbours gardens, when you can't even confirm that it was their cats that did it? petty me thinks.......
from Mrs Harrison and Magic and Shadow our two cats.”

“I agree it's appalling they never mess in their own gardens. I pick it up and throw into the gardens where the cats come from.”
