I feel I must write in reply to 'Let's Nail the Cats for Trespassing'.

Some time ago someone wrote in your paper from Brislington stating if cats should come on to your garden or get into your house you should be able to shoot them.

How people keep these smelly horrible pets I don't know. They mess anywhere and kill our birds. If you should be unlucky to go into someone's house who have cats (sometimes they have more than one) the smell stays on your clothes. In fact I have been sick when I go home.

Come on people, it is time that a law is passed so that cats trespassing on private land were rounded up and destroyed. The sooner the better.

Alan, Brislington.

“Sounds like you could do with looking down 2 metal holes, where is your soul? People like you with 0 empathy for animals perturb me deeply, how far out of touch from your core self can you be, you are indeed a mammal yourself.
I'm sure though barely trained enough as one to use human facilities, have you really thought your post through?”

“For goodness sake... what ridiculous comments on here from unhinged cat haters

I get annoyed when birds poop on my car windscreen - shall I shoot them? Or when dogs bark incessantly at night - shall I shoot them? Or when rubbish parents can't control their wild children - shall I shoot them?”

“Sane, how about a tax on dog food too so that the council can clear up their poop when their owners can't be bothered to clear that up? Simple Solution really, don't complain about cats, before you think about dog owners too.
Casual dad - Lemon juice or any other organic strong smelling food stuffs, even an oil like lemongrass will deter cats, don't think i would be too happy if my cat got blinded by washing up liquid, although i agree that a high pressure water pistol is very effective and non harming towards any cats who come into your garden.
Feline Angry, i can understand your plight that you obviously dislike cats, i personally do not like dogs, and to have to walk up a communal driveway dodging doggy do when i know that has not been my cat (certainly waay too large!), but i'm also thankful that if my cat was to stay into your garden and you were to take them to the local cat charity it will promptly be returned to me, as they are microchipped. I just feel that people have far too much time on their hands worrying who or what comes into their garden. If someone wants to throw excrement at my front door then that is fine, but the police will be involved, as they cannot confirm if it was indeed one of my cats that did it, nor that of any of the other dozen cats in the local area, i can just imagine it now, someone walking the streets with a bag of poo throwing it at doors just becuase it's THEIR choice to own a cat.
Please people put this to rest, i respect peoples opinion but to slander them as to their own choices is just a bit too sad.
what's next?! people complaining that fat people take up 2 seats on the bus?! please....”

“I found a sonic cat scarer very effective but why should I incur the cost of this? How about a tax on cat food so that anyone who wants a free cat scarer can have one, paid for by the cat owners?”

“Until several irresponsible people in our locality decided to get themselves one of these lovable but horrible creatures, we did not realise what a disgusting smell, awful mess, and personal upset is caused when one's garden, especially in the vicinity of the back door is used as a toilet by these animals! Already, I can hear the howls of outrage now I've used the term 'irresponsible'. Yes, all you cat owners who have not educated your animals into using a cat-lit box on your own property ARE irresponsible, and i'll spell it out for you in case you didn't get it into your heads the first time - IRRESPONSIBLE! I'm sure that if I let my offspring loose to use the gardens in the locality as a toilet, similar howls of 'irresponsible parent' would be echoing around the neighbourhood in no time. For Caroline of Thornbury, it definitely is not 'probably a fox anyway', and for Mike of Bristol, I stand up and applaud you for returning the substance from whence it came; I admire your restraint in not returning it by other means! If anyone can recommend a sensible and humane low/nil cost of keeping these animals off our flower beds I would be most grateful, because consider this - I am not going to use my money to pay for someone elses creature to keep off my property! And also consider this - I agree that by law, these animals cannot be prevented from entering your garden, but, if I catch one then it will be treated as a stray and action taken accordingly. And if this means taking it to a cats home where it will have to be kept until claimed ( by irresponsible cat owners? - I think not!) at cat lovers' expense, then so be it!”
