Marcus Trescothick will today be named in Somerset's final 15-man squad for the Champions League in India next month.

There has been speculation over whether the former England batsman would choose to take part in his first overseas cricket since he returned home early from the tour to Australia in 2006 with the stress-related condition that forced him to retire from the international game.

Trescothick had declined to comment on the Champions League last week but will be Somerset CCC's vice-captain for the Twenty20 tournament that starts on October 8.

It is a huge boost for the county's hopes of progressing in the inaugural competition. They must win one of their group games against Indian side Deccan Chargers or Trindad & Tobago to progress to the second phase.

Trescothick will be housed with his family in an un-named Asian city and flown in for the games.

Justin Langer will captain the side in what is expected to be his last cricket for Somerset.

There are few surprises in the party, except perhaps for the presence of Taunton-born batsman Jos Buttler.

The England Under-19 international is yet to play a first-team game for Somerset but will travel as reserve wicketkeeper to back up Craig Kieswetter.

Buttler, 18, has got the nod ahead of Carl Gazzard, who is much more experienced but soon to be out of contract.

Somerset qualified for the Champions League by making the final of the Twenty20 Cup after beating Kent in the semi-final before losing to Sussex.

Somerset are back in action tomorrow when Essex visit Taunton for a Pro40 League Division One match (4.40pm).

The following day sees Somerset begin a Championship match at home to Lancashire.

Play on the first day will start at 11.30am – an hour later than is normal in September – because of the previous night's Pro40.

Somerset CCC Champions League squad: Langer, Trescothick, de Bruyn, Hildreth, Kieswetter, Trego, Suppiah, Thomas, Waller, Willoughby, Durston, Turner, Banks, Buttler, Phillips.
