Train company takes action on Bristol route ahead of predicted snow
The first flakes are yet to fall but already some train services have been affected by Friday's weather forecast for heavy snow in the Bristol area and across the South West in general.
Some trains will be cancelled and others face revised services in south and south-west England.

Jake Kelly, customer service director for the South West Trains - Network Rail Alliance, said: "Over the past few days, we have been carefully monitoring the weather forecast to enable us to make a decision about the level of service we should plan to run.
"With severe weather warnings in place for heavy snow on our network, we have taken the decision to put a special timetable in place for Friday 18 January.
"We know that what our passengers want most is certainty about when and how they are going to get to their destination.
"This special timetable helps ensure this by running slightly fewer services and allowing more time for trains to cope with poor conditions."
Mr Kelly said it would help avoid train crew being in the wrong place and would help passengers plan ahead.
The revised timetables have been published on the South West Trains website: http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/

“The usual chaos every time it snows...
Trains affected, buses will be affected and so to coaches.
The only way you can get anywhere is by car - but then we get absolutely hammered for driving cars! Expensive fuel, insurance etc etc... and in an ideal world you need a 4x4 for the snow, which means our pockets will be hit even more!
Lose, lose situation.”

“SWT damned if they do, damned if they don't. I think it is right to plan ahead for an event that IS going to happen. SWT are being proactive in preparing to deal with difficult circumstances rather than reacting after the event, which would cause a lot more disruption to passengers... and surely face the criticism from the likes of John Katachua.”

“Cptn_Pugwash needs to get out and about more!
South West Trains run FOUR services between Salisbury and Bristol.
One of these, the 06:40 off Salisbury, provides a morning commuter service from Oldfield Park (07:37) and Keynsham (07:44) to Bristol.
The Bristol Post is right to run this story, as it may prevent some people going out for a train which isn't running!”

“And this is misleading to passengers travelling between Bristol and Salisbury. First Great Western run the majority of trains on this route, and SWT only two per day, so it's a bit daft of the Bristol Post to run this story when most trains are so far unaffected.”

“Utter madness! Words just totally fail me. South West Trains should be hung out to dry for being the most outrageously stupid company in the Country. Who ever haerd of anything so daft as cancelling trains before it even starts snowing???”

“They're cutting the trains BEFORE the snow! Wonderful!
The lesson is, if you want to travel, get a car, otherwise stay at home.
Can we have our railways back, please? Privatisation has been shown to be an expensive disaster. Fine for the shareholders - a nightmare for the passengers.”
