Commuters in Bristol faced delays to their journey last night due to slow-moving traffic on the Avonmouth Bridge.

A combination of rush hour and roadworks on the northbound carriageway meant long queues for motorists in both directions on the M5.

The disruption spread to other major roads, including the M32 and routes through the city centre, as drivers tried to find a way around the delays.

Robin Miller, spokesman for the Highways Agency, said: "Last year the southbound carriageway was resurfaced and Fridays were often very busy, this year we are doing the northbound carriageway. Traffic is moving very slowly."

“I live in Portishead. Firstly: the positive. The people responsible for organising the traffic in the M5 bridge roadworks are better organised this time. There are two slip roads at J19 onto the Northbound M5 and at certain peak times, 4 lanes going in one direction, 2 in the other.
So why is the traffic so bad?
Firstly: double lines of cones side by side give the illusion to the motorist that there is less room than there actually is, and secondly the original lane markings are still visible along with the temporary high vis ones, causing people to lane drift and brake. Yes the volume of traffic is still high, but if we could have single lines of cones and only one set of lane markers, I bet things would improve.”
