Landlords with properties in the town's central ward who fail to maintain and upgrade their accommodation could be forced to make repairs as part of a new licensing scheme.

The move to introduce new legislation to force landlords of houses of multiple occupation to bring them up to standard follows complaints from tenants and residents.

The regulations would force landlords to bring their properties up to an acceptable standard.

North Somerset Council executive member for housing, Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, said the survey showed that this part of Weston, in general, had an issue with poorly managed accommodation that was impacting on the area as a whole.

He said: "Some landlords do almost nothing to maintain and improve their properties causing tenants to live in poor conditions. We have listened to the local concerns and want to tackle this issue by ensuring that landlords have a duty to look after their properties and cater for the basic accommodation needs of their tenants."

Consultation for the proposed regulations is due to last for ten weeks.
