Mr Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke, had been suffering with ill health since January but believed it was just a virus he could not shake.

Last Wednesday he went to his doctor and was referred to Frenchay to undergo a series of tests which revealed he had an infection near his appendix.

He is now resting at home in Filton and hopes to return to his duties within the next week or two.

He told The Post: “I’ve been feeling poorly since January but thought it was just a virus that I was finding hard to shake off.

"I went to the Doctors on Wednesday last week and they referred me to Frenchay and after a series of tests established that I had appendicitis.

"The good news is that I’m now back at home and expect to be fighting fit within a week or two.

"I’d like to take the opportunity to give my huge thanks and pay tribute to the Nurses, Doctors and all the staff at Frenchay for the excellent care I received.”

“I wonder how many of his constituents will notice his absence? He's not exactly set the world alight since being elected, has he? So far he appears to be the classic 'yes man'. He did vote against gay marriage when allowed a free vote (make of that what you will).

I wish him a full and speedy recovery.”

“Perhaps Mr. Lopresti will stand up against his governments attacks on the NHS. I won't hold my breath.”
