The Conservatives will wipe out Labour in the Bristol region with just Dawn Primarolo hanging on to her seat, according to a new poll.

Research released as the Tories descended on Manchester for their annual party conference will buoy activists. It shows that the party would take power with a majority of 70, although that figure has halved since this time last year.

In the former Avon area, the YouGov poll shows Labour's Kerry McCarthy (Bristol East) and Roger Berry (Kingswood) would lose their seats to the Conservatives.

Dan Norris, who has a majority of just 1,839, would lose his Wansdyke seat when it becomes North East Somerset under boundary changes, according to the survey.

Retiring MP Doug Naysmith's seat, being fought by Labour candidate Sam Townend, will also go to the Tories, the research carried out on behalf of the PoliticsHome website predicts.

The poll was based on more than 33,000 online interviews across 238 marginal constituencies and claims to be the most accurate available seat-by-seat prediction of the outcome of the next General Election.

Although the Conservatives have lost ground in seaside towns, London and the North, they are set for a "solid victory", taking 360 seats, with Labour dropping to 199 seats and the Lib Dems 55 seats.
