The Time Team presenter told them what work he was currently doing and spoke of some of his most famous roles such as Baldrick in Blackadder, before signing autographs for students and staff alike.
Christine Cox, essential skills co-ordinator at YES, said all of the students were thrilled to see him. She said: "We always invite him to our Christmas parties but he is always very busy, so he said that when he is next in Bristol he would come and visit us. It was really great to see him. It was a lovely occasion. Everyone was thoroughly amused and we all laughed a lot.
"He told us that he has been filming all over the place and was in Bristol today to do some filming for the new museum.
"The students were incredibly pleased to see him. They were very chuffed indeed and it was a very nice event."
YES is a provider of informal learning opportunities to young people and adults. Its aim is to complement other providers by targeting "hard to reach" groups, and to offer a personal and individual service.
YES provides services that include literacy and numeracy classes for adults and children; English and maths groups at community venues across the city; individual basic skills tuition for non-attending Key Stage 4 pupils; and essential Skills at Fairbridge West, St Paul's, which target 'at risk' young people.
