Former Bristol University student Jonathon Tiernan-Locke has gained his second top-10 finish in a Premier Calendar race for his new team, Sport Beans-Wilier.

Following up his fourth place at the Chas Messenger road race, Tiernan-Locke came home ninth of almost 200 starters in the Abstraction Lincoln Grand Prix in Lincolnshire on Sunday.

The former Plowman Craven rider was in a lead group of around 10 riders with about half of the 90-mile race to go.

This group, which comprised all the big hitters, including eventual race winner Russell Downing (Candi TV-Marshalls Pasta), proved powerful enough to stay away from a hard-chasing main bunch.

Tiernan-Locke stayed in contention until Downing made a decisive attack on the cobbles of the daunting Michaelgate Hill in Lincoln on the last lap of the race, finishing 47 seconds behind the winner.

Result: 1 Russell Downing (Candi TV-Marshalls Pasta) 3:11:11 2 Ian Wilkinson (Halfords Bikehut) 3:11:12 3 Chris Newton (Rapha Condor) 3:11:25 4 Dean Downing (Rapha Condor) 3:11:58 5 Malcolm Elliott (Candi TV-Marshalls Pasta) same time 6 Mark McNally (Halfords Bikehut) st 7 Arno van der Zwet (Ruiter Dakkapellen Wielerteam) st 8 Simon Gaywood (Team Corley Cycles) st 9 Jonathan Tiernan-Locke (Sports Beans/Wilier) st 10 Kit Gilham (Sigma Sport) 3:12:18.

The Severn Road Club is staging its Evening 10 series on Wednesdays until August 26 on a new course, based at the Old Down (Olveston) Sports and Social Club ground. The first rider goes off at 7.01pm.

Entry fee is £2 for club members and £1 for juniors. Under-18s must provide a signed parental consent form. Non-members are welcome (£3 per ride). Call Paul Evans on 0117 9798277 for further details and parental consent forms.

Latest result: 1 Simon Hayward (Severn RC) 21:36 2 Mark Wilkinson (Severn RC) 22:29 3 David Curtis-Whitfield (Felt Racing) 22:44 4 Chris Davies (Halesowen A & CC) 23:44 5 Sam Butler 24:03 6 Jerry Seymour (Severn RC) 24:38 7 Rob Dixon (Severn RC) 24:52 8 David Leighton (Severn RC) 25:00 9 Mike Horder (Severn RC) 25:01 10 Chris Newby (Bad Tri) 25:12
