CLIFTON has been voted as one of the best places to live in Britain.

Described as an "exclusive quarter" of Bristol, it was voted one of the top 101 places to live in the Sunday Times.

  1. Royal York Crescent, Clifton

    Royal York Crescent, Clifton

Journalist Eleanor Mills used several criteria to select each location including proximity to nature, appealing properties, cultural attractions, good schools, great shops and excellent transport links.

She also took into account the hard data on crime statistics, school performance, life expectancy, community spirit and house prices and even access to the nearest Waitrose.

Ms Mills said that despite being the setting for teen drama Skins Clifton is a "thriving city village that ticks all the boxes".

She lauds the "Georgian architecture, brilliant food, watering holes and boutiques that sell everything from an organic courgette to an evening gown", and praises its "compact scale and pedestrian-friendly streets" that allows residents and visitors to get everywhere by foot.

St John's Church of England primary and Bristol Grammar School get a mention as excellent schools while Cornwallis Crescent is highlighted for being close to the Suspension Bridge and Percival Road for being close to the Downs.

Family homes here cost anything between £850,000 and £2 million, while two-bedroom flats can be had for £295,000, she says.

In terms of eateries the Brunel Raj, Clifton Sausage and Rosemarino – all in Clifton Village – are praised for serving up the best nosh.

According to her, the locals say: "We knock spots off Bath — and we're less pretentious, too."

And finally the reason for Clifton's lofty position is revealed.

"A relaxed, bohemian urban village with cracking architecture and a thriving cafe culture."

“Yes, blessed with far more natural and man-made beauty than almost any other UK city suburb, but predominantly rude and snobby people reside there. As horrid as the London Hampstead and Dulwich Village lot.”

“Ms Mills obviously didn't see the huge number of empty shops in the village. Can only hope that the new man, a north somerset councillor, who's been appointed to run the Clifton Business Improvement District can get the shops open again. One wonders though why someone from Clifton wasn't appointed to this job.

Apart from Ms Vorderman, Smiley Miley of the Radio One Roadshow can often be see in the village.”

“Some glamour is now added by Carol Vorderman, one of the residents."

“Cliftonians knew this anyway. John Betjeman described it as the "Queen of Suburbs". Some glamour is now added by Carol Vorderman, one of the residents.”
