Thousands of householders in South Gloucestershire have spoken out against a planned FM radio broadcast switch-off.

Northavon MP Steve Webb said he had received a huge response to a survey on television, radio and the internet which he sent to families in his constituency.

Questions about the Government's plan to move to digital radio for the major national radio stations from about 2015 received an especially large number of comments.

The change will mean existing radios, car radios and other similar equipment will become largely redundant as the main stations will only be heard on digital services.

Mr Webb said roughly five out of every six of those surveyed said they objected to the plans.

The MP is now planning to voice their concerns in Parliament when the issues is debated.

Mr Webb said: "Tens of thousands of my constituents have FM radio equipment, ranging from small transistor radios to car radios and home stereo equipment.

"To scrap FM broadcasts as the Government is planning would create massive and unnecessary waste."
