THORNBURY kicked off their 50th anniversary season with a seven-try demolition of newly-promoted Chard in South West One West.

The South Gloucestershire side led only 8-6 at the break, before piling up 34 points without reply.

Thornbury's tries came from Dai Matthews (2), Dan Hussey, Adam Hodgkins, Ollie Fleming, Jak Evans and Luke Workman. Tim Stephens kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Old Reds, bidding to bounce straight back to South West One West, dug deep to hold on for an 11-10 success at Wadebridge.

Full-back Craig Owen scored his side's only try, while there were also two crucial penalties from Jack Steer as new-look Reds were pushed hard after leading 11-3 at the turnaround.

Cleve observed a minute's silence before their 30-9 defeat of Paignton in memory of Dick Gill, a former president, life member and committee member who died suddenly.

The Devon side took a six-point lead with two penalties. But Cleve, captained again by Sam Roach, edged 15-9 clear at the break and won with something to spare.

Cleve's tries came from Shak Ajuwa (2), Adam Lambert and TJ Madamombe. Ollie Phillips kicked two conversions and two penalties.

Clevedon completed a cleansweep for Combination clubs in this division with a notable 33-31 victory at Sidmouth, where captain Tom Thie, on the wing, touched down twice.

In National Three South West, Weston-super-Mare thrashed Amersham & Chiltern 58-10 under new captain Gavin Simpson. Ross Bennett (3) and Matt Watkins (2) scored five of the tries.
