1936: Duncan Edwards was born. Edwards made his England debut, aged 18, against Scotland in 1955. He died of injuries sustained in the Munich air disaster in 1958.

1951: The first competitive football match was played under floodlights at The Dell, a reserve contest between Southampton and Tottenham.

1975: Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali fought the 'Thriller in Manila' for the world heavyweight title. Defending champion Ali won at the end of 14 rounds.

1998: Former Arsenal boss George Graham became the new manager of Tottenham.

2000: Boxer Audley Harrison won Great Britain's 10th gold medal of the Sydney Olympics when he beat Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov.

2005: Former New Zealand wing Jonah Lomu signed for Cardiff Blues.

2008: Northampton forward Neil Best was banned for 18 weeks by the Rugby Football Union after admitting illegally making contact with the eye or eye area of Wasps' James Haskell with his hand during a Guinness Premiership game.
