A BISHOPSTON woman has been sentenced after she was caught having put a discount sticker on an item of clothing in a bid to save £8.

Beth Allen, 21, admitted theft from TK Maxx in The Galleries shopping centre when she appeared before Bristol Magistrates' Court.

Andrea Edwards, prosecuting, said Allen was caught having put a red clearance sticker on an item of clothing which was not included as part of the shop's sale.

The court was told she tried to make a saving of £8 by attempting to get away with paying £4 for the item, which was originally marked up at £12.

When she was arrested after the incident on the morning of January 26, Edwards told officers she was in debt and was 16 weeks pregnant.

Ms Edwards said Allen, of Salthrop Road, had two previous offences for dishonesty to her name between 2007 and 2011. She was given a six-month community order last December for theft from a shop and assaulting a police constable.

Guy Percival, defending, said the latest theft had not been planned.

He said: "She was browsing and saw a top she liked. She took a clearance label and stuck it on, hoping to get £4 rather than £12. It wasn't a really expensive item she was trying to take. She got caught and fully co-operated with the police."

Magistrates ordered Allen to remain at home under curfew between 7pm and 7am for the next 12 weeks. She was also ordered to pay £40 costs.

    “@Ems12321

"They called the Police for THIS?

Is this why when my brother was 13 years old and was punched in the face by a 35 year old man for no reason the police came 2 days later?"

Let me explain - the clothing was property and is therefore important. Your brother is human and is therefore unimportant.

Allow me to add my GRRR to yours...”

“I can fully understand a ban from the store and a caution from the police for her wrong doings, but how much did this cost to get to court?”
