Tenants of a Bristol tower block celebrated a £2-million renovation of their homes with some of the people who have worked on the project.

Over the past 18 months, Lansdowne Court in Easton Way, Easton – which is home to 128 households – has been given a major facelift.

As well as a new roof, all the windows have been replaced and the building has been given cladding several inches thick to improve insulation.

Sixty of the flats have new kitchens and 65 have new bathrooms as well, while 95 have been rewired.

Copper waste pipes have been replaced and Rok, the main contractor, redecorated the communal room at its own cost.

Gillian Durden, manager of the repairs and maintenance service for council housing, said Rok worked hard with the Bristol City Council team to make it a positive experience for residents while work was being done on site.

Joyce Ellis, 72, who has lived in Lansdowne Court since 1985, cut the ribbon at a celebration on Wednesday to mark the end of the renovation.

She said: "The flats are now lovely and warm and we are very happy.

"It used to be ever so cold in the winter and you could hear the wind whistling through the windows."

Richard Gane, 41, who has a hip problem, said: "I've been here since 1998. It was so cold between October and February that I used to wrap myself in a quilt.

"The windows were old and we used to get condensation running down them.

"It's so warm now, you can walk about in shorts. It's made a huge difference."

John Harris, 61, who used to put fences up for the city council, was the tenants' representative.

He said: "I worked very closely with Rok and raised issues with them and they would sort it out."

The new windows and cladding have cut tenants electricity bills by as much as 25 per cent.

Another tenant, aged 82, who did not want to be named, said: "It's very nice. It used to be very cold in here. It has made a difference. My heating bill is down."

Councillor Judith Price said: "The main aim of this project was to improve the quality of living for all our tenants and we have done this by increasing the thermal efficiency of the building, making sure it is watertight and that each property meets the decent homes standard.

"I would like to thank everyone involved who has worked so hard to give Lansdowne Court a new lease of life.

"We have an ongoing programme of investment for all our buildings across the city and we are committed to ensuring all our tenants live in a decent home."

Adrian Marshman, planned- maintenance team leader for Rok, said: "Working at Lansdowne Court has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

"Working here for 18 months has allowed us to build a strong bond with the community. We are extremely proud of the works we have undertaken and are delighted we have been able to touch the lives of so many people."
