This is Bristol

What do you love about Bristol? Is it the Clifton Suspension Bridge? Banksy's graffiti? Or are you just proud to live in the city that coined the phrase 'gert lush'?

Whatever you love about it, we want to hear from you.

Along with the Kingsmill West and Wales Region Bakery, the Bristol Evening Post is launching a competition today to find out why you love Bristol, and what you love most about it.

It could be a landmark, an area of the city, a beauty spot with a great view, or just somewhere that is special to you.

Maybe it is where your husband proposed to you, or where you walk your dog every day, or your favourite cycle path.

We would like to know if your favourite place in Bristol is a concert venue, your local shop or a park bench where you sit each afternoon.

Whether you have lived in Bristol all your life, or just moved here, have your say as part of our We Love Bristol campaign.

There will be an entry form in the Evening Post every day this week which you can complete and send back to us, or you can enter online.

So tell us – do you love Bristol because of its music? Because of the buildings? Or because of the people? Do you love it so much that you would never consider moving away?

John Payne, vice-chairman of the Bristol Civic Society, said: "What we find is that people in Bristol like the variety of buildings, especially older buildings and good quality new buildings.

"They like the squares and crescents around the city, and they like places such as Brandon Hill, Castle Park and the Harbourside in particular."

Everyone who sends in a suggestion will be automatically entered into a prize draw and one lucky reader will win £500.

All entries must be received by midday on Thursday, September 11 , and all suggestions will be featured in the Bristol Evening Post on September 19.

“I love Bristol, so much! I've recently come back from a trip overseas and I really appreciate the diversity here, Easton is great, mix of everybody, I love up and coming areas like Windmill Hill, St George and St Pauls . . I like Clifton, the village up there and seeing the Suspension Bridge. I love Banksy, the range of food, every type of person different flavours and colours.

To all the moaners out there, please stop hating, every city has it's bad and good points, yeah the transport here sucks, we don't all sound or look like Vicky Pollard, enjoy and embrace, there are worse places out there.

If you don't like it here, do yourself, and us favour and leave!

    GO BRISTOL
    I LOVES IT
    CHEERS DRIVE!”

“I moved to Bristol two years ago and felt at home here almost straight away. I love the diversity of the city. I like the big old houses of clifton, the view from Ashley hill or kingsdown, the shops and cafes on gloucester road, sitting outside the pubs by the waterside in the summer, the bridge with 'shrek horns', films at the watershed, the hippodrome, the number of festivals and events going on in the summer such as st pauls carnival and the baloon fiesta, talking a walk by Snuff Mills and going up the town on Brandon Hill. I like most things about Bristol.”

“I love Bristol because the Bristol Evening Post brings me so much joy. Surely the funniest (unintentionally) local paper in the land. Parochial, out of date and has a strange fascination with WSM's pier - very odd!!”

“I love living in a City that has been voted the Happiest (incl a Gov survey), Smiliest, Funniest and most Honest. I have never regretted my move from London in '05; and am proud that there are so many lovely, diverse & unique places to take my friends & family. I visited Portsmouth once, and thought never again - apart from the ships, it must be one the dulliest & depressing cities. Look at 'has an attitude' Liverpool from an aeriel view and you could count the number of trees, it's so lacking flora, and apart from its colossal Victorian buildings and nice Georgian streets in a few areas, it couldn't be called a pretty place; my Brummie sister said it looked very dull(!), and wasn't impressed with their Harbour area, unlike Bristol's. My bro (61) & his wife once wanted to live in dark granite Edinburgh or one-dimensional Cheltenham, but as vegans and creative people, and seeing that Bristol is a multi-cultural City, would prefer to move here - they laugh fondly at the painted, arty houses in Montpelier and the shops, the variety of shops/eateires on Gloucester Rd & couldn't imagine any district in Birmingham looking or feeling like several here, and he loves the number of classic old cars, and painted camper vans and vehicles around; and surprised that my Asian corner shop sells all their organic brands that takes them several trips in B'ham, also that Bristol has a lovely laid-back atmosphere, friendlier and has such a colourful history. I think many forget that it is a medieval City, that was not under the Church, aristocracy or landowners, but has been trading prosperously since Saxon times in diverse trades, with merchants that funded voyages and landmarks from over 500 years ago. It has had a long-held confidence, unlike many of those brash, 'didn't have the foresight, put their eggs in one basket' Victorian industrial cities that became striking, unemployment blackspots, that not only have boulders on their shoulders, but want everything handed to them on a plate. I'm so relieved when I'm on my way back to Bristol after visiting London & some of these, supposedly, funny cities.

All the problems the moaners talk about exist elsewhere too, even small towns, and anti-social behaviour in Manchester and Liverpool are more evident. St Paul's with its thriving businesses and mixed bunch of residents is like a toothless tiger compared to many London districts, and districts like Handsworth & Lozells (B'ham), Moss Side (Manc), Croxteth and Toxteth (L'pool) and Chapeltown & so many other districts (Leeds), that have streets upon streets of properties boarded up, shops are few and far between, towns solely consisting of social housing, mainly high-rise flats or rows and rows of back-to-back gardenless terraces, and just so drab etc. And they've had billions of Govt & EC funding, and sweeteners to entice foreign businesses to locate there because they were so dire.

I've been at my happiest and smiliest here, esp when I've been in happy, hippy crowds that go to St Werburgh's City Farm Summer Fair, St Paul's Carnival, the coming together in Queen Square during Refugee Week, the lovely ambience at the Harbour Fest & Air Ballloon Fiesta. Most visitors just love the City and these events. I've had foreigners say Clifton Wood reminds them of Burona, Venice and ofther lovely overseas places. The colourful and eccentric sub-cultures, eclectic archictecture and landscape is a joy to behold,”

“Lived here all my life, married , brought up our children here. St George park, brings back memories, when children were younger having picnics in park, feeding swans, skate boarding .Vassalls park when you have children, dogs, lush place to go, making rope swing, across the stream, rain or shine you can explore the woods. When the film crew were there filming Robin Hood many years ago they left behind mounds of mulch good for the garden! We made a go cart and to get the bags of mulch to the car I had to sit on the back, two kids bag mulch, went down the hill like the clappers, great fun great memories. We always wanted to live near a park ime now living opposite page park staplehill, it has well kept gardens clean park has an avairy, tennis ,fete in summer bowling, grand children love the park .Rain, shine Bristol offers families wide range off activities to do through out summer holidays in fact through out the year ,be it cineama, museum, eating out List goes on.......”
