An area known as HeadSpace has been installed in Hartcliffe library as a place where teenagers can meet.

It has been funded by the National Lottery, and organised by the city council and the Reading Agency.

People aged 11 to 19 have been given the chance to design a space within the library where they can get together with others, take part in positive activities, volunteer, seek information and inspiration, or simply pick up a book, read or enjoy a drink and a snack.

Kate Davenport, the council's service director for economic and cultural development, said: "We are delighted to be able to offer young people in Hartcliffe their own HeadSpace within the library.

"This will give them new opportunities to meet up in a safe environment, make their own decisions about how they spend their time and access all the library's services. HeadSpace is also sending out a clear a message – that young people are welcome – and their involvement is valued.

"I'm sure 'HeadSpace' will be a great success and hope to be able to offer similar initiative at other libraries across the city."
