Teen health roadshow in North Somerset
A teenage health roadshow which toured North Somerset giving teenagers advice on issues including drug abuse and active lifestyles has been hailed a success by organisers.
The roadshow, co-ordinated by North Somerset Council's youth service teenage health project, toured the area over four weeks, offering advice sessions and providing activities for 319 teenagers.
Colleagues from the council's sports and active lifestyles team together with the substance abuse service, No Worries, school nursing team, stop smoking service, Connexions, children and adolescent mental health service, and Bristol's chlamydia screening programme, worked together to raise young people's awareness on issues about their health.
They explored smoking habits and understood the risks by using the 'smokerlyser', a machine that measures the amount of carbon monoxide in a smoker's lungs.
Youngsters also used special beer goggles and unit calculators to explore what impact alcohol can have on body and mind.
Sexual health activities included condom demonstrations, self-examination techniques using models of body parts, and discussion-based activities focusing on relationships and delaying sexual activities.
There was also a range of physical activities including a cycle challenge on an exercise bike.
