A fierce South West wind put the fish off their feed and weights dropped to well below average in the South West Disabled & Over-55s AC match, fished on Match Pool at Acorn Carp Lakes.

Pole lengths were reduced considerably but even so those members with enough strength to reach the far margins caught little more than those fishing close-in.

The fish were well spread out and it was the near right-hand margins of peg four that came up with the biggest part of a 52-0-0 winning weight for Ted Bethel.

The Alcove AC chairman poled soft pellet and paste at nine metres centre and caught three quick five-pounders.

He said: "Unfortunately, the wind became stronger after my third fish and I lost the next four. When good bait presentation became impossible I switched tack to the near margins.

"I started catching loads of smaller fish regularly and had no reason to change back during the last hour when the wind subsided."

Runner-up was Bob 'The Bread' Price, who poled paste and soft 6mm pellet hard on the bottom at 11 metres centre off peg 16 and weighed in a 34-4-0 catch of carp to almost 5-0-0.

Avon Angling's Martin Alexander came third with a 30-6-0 catch of silvers and carp. He poled soft pellet at nine metres centre off peg 15 for three carp totalling 15-2-0.

He switched later to his right-hand lakeside margins and maggot to tempt an additional 15-4-0 of perch.

Alcove AC's Bill Ferris finished in fourth place at peg 10, where caster and maggot poled at four metres into the near right-hand margins came up with 18-10-0 of silvers and carp. He beat Tom Coulson into fifth place by just 6oz.

Result – Overall: 1, Ted Bethel (Alcove AC) 52-0-0, peg 4; 2, Bob "The Bread" Price 34-4-0, peg16; 3, Martin Alexander 30-6-0, peg 15; 4, Bill Ferris 18-10-0, peg 10; 5, Tom Coulson 18-4-0, peg 17; 6, Wayne Garland. 15-0-0, peg 8.
