FIVE friends took on an epic challenge to swim the equivalent of 100 miles around Clevedon's Marine Lake to raise money for charity.

Jon Parker from Clevedon was joined by Karl Whittaker, Dr Bruce Hughes, Paul Urwin and John Jameson, all from North Devon, for the stunt. They initially planned to swim from Guernsey to North Devon – the first ever sea challenge of its kind – to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust's Sanofi Challenge to raise £100,000 across the UK. But bad weather meant it was cancelled.

The group then chose to swim the equivalent of 100 miles by doing circuits around Marine Lake.

The relay challenge kicked off at around 10am on Friday with the swimmers completing the final circuit at 3pm on Saturday. The men swam through the night, helped by kayakers and illuminated buoys.

They have already reached a total of £8,500 in sponsorship and pledges.

Event project manager Ian O Hare said: "It was a hugely demanding challenge for all those involved.

"It was very disappointing to have to cancel the sea swim because of the weather and we had already collected a lot of money in sponsorship and did not want to let people down so we had to find an alternative venue fast."
