Taylor's brace gains Portishead Juniors a victory
Bristol Girls League: The top two teams in the Under-12 A Division of the Bristol Girls League met in north Somerset, with Portishead Juniors beating AEK Boco 3-0 thanks mainly to Taylor Gainey's brace.
Portishead almost took the lead very early on when a volley from Maisie Kincaid narrowly missed the Boco net with their goalkeeper stranded.
Juniors remained on the front foot for most of the half although Boco's pace in attack was a danger to the home defence of Ellie Grey and Cadie Dunn.
Goalkeeper Alice Pritchard rose well to clear a Boco corner with a strong punch which fell to Annabelle Colston who linked well with strike partner Gainey to shoot narrowly over from distance.
However, the deadlock was broken midway through the first half after some strong tackling and support play in midfield from Jennie Mistry found Gainey to score from inside the penalty box for a half-time lead.
Boco started the second half strongly and pressed forward for the equaliser, but they were denied by the resilient Portishead defence.
With the influential Kincaid pulling the strings in the home midfield, Juniors regained their control and extended their lead through Colston.
Further pressure from Juniors resulted in a corner kick which Kincaid took to find Gainey unmarked in the box to net her second of the day.
Frampton Rangers B Girls Under-10s beat Longwell Green B 3-1, with goals from Lily Martin and Ruby Michaels and an own goal.
The top-of-the-table clash between St Nicholas and Ashton Girls in the U11A Division saw Ashton Girls come out as 2-0 winners, with goals from Lottie Hancock and Jayde Cook inflicting St Nicks' first loss of the season.
Bitton Under-11s won 7-3 away at Mendip Girls. Shelby Haynes and Courtney Smith both netted twice, with Aimee Woods, Riley Wren and Sarah Underhill also on target.
In the Under-12 B Division, Longwell Green B beat Downend B 1-0. Green peppered the Downend goal from the off, with shot after shot.
Alicia Edwards nearly opened the lead for Green, while Lauren Griffin hit a post with a fine shot and had another just wide. Eventually Edwards struck to win the match.
The second half was much the same, with Emily Flowers striking over and then just wide. When Downend did break, Ellie Evans in the Green goal made several great saves and Ellen Bowditch and Lauren Sollis put in some fine tackles.
Backwell Athletic Girls Under-12s beat Weston St Johns 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Alice Lucas.
With both sides showing great commitment, chances were few and far between in a first half in which defences were on top, with Sarah Wilson and Ele Moss in commanding form for Backwell.
As play opened up in the second half, Athletic began to create opportunities with Jen Atherton and Amy Hynam both going close to scoring before Lucas broke the deadlock when she was first to react after a 50-50 challenge with the Weston keeper and hooked the ball home.
Determined performances from Ellie Richards, Shannon Holloway and Lucy Hickling, and secure goalkeeping from Kathryn Howells ensured that Backwell held on to the lead.
In this second match between the two sides, Backwell stormed into a 3-0 lead within the first 10 minutes thanks to a well-taken hat-trick from the pacy Shannon Holloway, and could have extended their lead as Kathryn Howells, Eliza Overton, Lucy Chewins and Sophie Coulson all went close to scoring.
At the other end, keeper Ellie Richards performed heroics to save a penalty, while defenders Maddy Cox and Emma Jackson combined well to limit the visitors oppotunities.
Weston pulled one back shortly after the break but Backwell held on to their advantage in an even and entertaining second half.
Wotton Rovers Girls Under-12s won 3-2 at Ashton A, with Alice Baker, Lois Iddles and Chloe Page on target, while keeper Annie Law saved a penalty.
In the Under-12 A Division, Bristol Ladies Union A fired six goals past Bristol Central to avenge a defeat earlier in the season. Laura Sainsbury set up Charlie Penn to put BLU ahead, only for Central to equalise.
But the Union then took control, with Maddie Nankervis, Sainsbury and Penn making it 4-1. Substitute Ruth Lowis then struck twice for BLU after replacing Penn, while Central netted a consolation.
St Nicholas Under-13s recorded a 3-1 win at home to Portishead thanks to Rosie Cronin (2) and Charlotte Davis.
Bristol Ladies Union and AEK Boco Under-14s fought out a thrilling 4-4 draw in a top-of-the-table clash. Jazz Williams starred for BLU with a hat-trick, with Chloe Campbell also on target.
Union were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to Williams. After the break Boco reduced the deficit, but Campbell and Williams gave BLU a commanding 4-1 lead.
However Boco fought back with three late goals to claim a point.
