Taunton Town 3 Burnham 0

Taunton completed the great escape under caretaker manager Paul Short to maintain their place in Division One South and West of the Southern League.

Short has already made it known he does not want the job on a permanent basis, while former skipper Paul West is thought to be interested in taking over.

Taunton went into this game having heard the news that fellow strugglers Winchester City had been deducted three points and fined £1,000 for playing an ineligible player.

But even though Winchester gained a surprise 4-2 win away to Windsor and Eton, Taunton's 3-0 victory was enough to keep them out of the relegation zone by one point.

Alexis Piper opened the scoring with a headed goal after 37 minutes and Nick McCootie hit a second in the 65th minute.

Danny Lane snapped up the all-important third goal to keep Taunton up in the 68th minute.

It ended an emotional day for Taunton, although Winchester, who finished at the bottom of the table, are set to appeal against their loss of points.
