Taunton Town boss walks away over financial wrangles
Ian Jones has quit as manager of struggling BGB Southern League club Taunton Town.
Jones recently began a new venture running the Brent Knoll Inn, near East Brent, with his wife, and the club say he has left the job "because of increased business commitments."
Taunton are near the foot of Division 1 South and West with only four games left to avoid relegation.
Club coach Paul Short has been named as caretaker manager assisted by ex-skipper Paul West.
"We will see how the pair do and review the situation at the end of the season," said club chairman Tom Harris last night.
"We definitely want to be playing Southern League football next season.
"We would like to place on record our appreciation to Ian for all his hard work."
The Weston-based Jones took over as manager from Gary Domone 15 months ago, having been a goalkeeper with the club. He has also played for Mangotsfield United and Chippenham Town.
His troubles began last October when his playing budget was slashed because of a "cash-flow problem" and he lost some key players.
"It became increasingly difficult for me to run the side after this," said Jones. "There are some people who think I should have walked away in December.
"Running the pub is not my sole reason for leaving - that remains within the club."
