TV doesn't do justice to Reggie
REGINALD D Hunter is best known for his appearances on hit television shows such as Have I Got News For You and QI. His calm and cool persona, soothing American southern accent and unpredictably witty dialogue, clearly differentiates him from other well-known comics.
But being entertained for a few minutes by 'Reggie' on the television is very different to being entertained for over an hour of live stand-up. True to form, however, Reginald proved himself to be an exceptional talent. He wooed and warmed the packed venue with his stories from childhood, his scientific theories and musings on modern day relationships.
At various points throughout the show, Reginald exposed us all by raising the lights and asking by show of hands, some very personal but hilarious questions - which then fuelled the next part of the gig. Surprisingly, due to Reginald's honesty and lack of embarrassment at his chosen topics, the audience followed suit and opened up without thinking, which made the exercise all the more comedic.
What makes Reginald D Hunter special as a comic is his ability to charm and draw in an audience through his presence and voice, as well as providing comedy which is refreshingly candid, simple, thoughtful, intelligent and at times political. He never crossed the line when toying with the crass or crude, and if he did, he did it with such gentlemanly charm, I didn't notice! This was a side splittingly funny performance and I would recommend going to see 'Reggie' live, as clearly, a few minutes on the television is not enough.
