A second school in North Somerset has been affected by an outbreak of swine flu.

Parents of pupils attending The Kings of Wessex School in Cheddar were issued letters to say a pupil had contracted the virus.

The letter from headteacher Chris Richardson was given to pupils to take home on July 2.

It read: "I am writing to inform you that there has been a confirmed case of one student at The Kings of Wessex School contracting the swine flu virus.

"The advice that we have received from Somerset County Council and Taunton and Somerset Health Protection Agency is that the school should remain open and that students should attend school as normal.

"Students and staff have been informed and have been told about what steps they can take to reduce the risk of catching or spreading flu."

The letter went on to say if a child has flu-like symptoms they should stay at home and rest, take paracetamol to relieve the symptoms, drink plenty of fluid and contact a GP or NHS Direct if the symptoms persist or if they develop complications, such as shortness of breath.

Mr Richardson added: "I trust that the above is helpful and please be assured that we are closely following the advice about hygiene here in school.

"Please check our website for any up-to-date information."

Letters were also sent out on Monday to parents of pupils attending Priory Community School in Weston-super-Mare to say a pupil had been affected.

The school in Queensway, Worle, also remains open with lessons carrying on as normal.

Headteacher Neville Coles said: "As swine flu is starting to circulate in the community, closing a school down would not necessarily help as students could still be exposed to it outside the school.

"Any child who has flu-like symptoms, including those diagnosed with swine flu, should stay at home until they have recovered and are free of symptoms."

Last week there was also a case at Clerical Medical in Clevedon.

The office in Tickenham Road employs around 540 people and it is thought at least one person has been affected and others have the flu-like symptoms.

Swine flu symptoms resemble regular human seasonal influenza infection and include fever, fatigue, lack of appetite, coughing and sore throat.

Some people with swine flu have also reported vomiting and diarrhoea.

Most of the previously reported swine flu cases recovered fully from the disease without requiring medical attention and without anti-viral medicines.
