Huddersfield Town have been rebuffed in an attempt to lure Swindon striker Simon Cox away from the County Ground, writes James McNamara.

The Daily Press understands Huddersfield manager Lee Clark turned his attentions to Cox, 21, after failing in bids to land Carlisle striker Danny Graham and Motherwell frontman Chris Porter last week and tabled a £500,000 offer on Friday.

The offer was made before the two sides clashed at the Galpharm Stadium on Saturday – where Cox scored a consolation goal in a 2-1 defeat – but Huddersfield were immediately told there was nothing doing by Town chairman Andrew Fitton.

Fitton confirmed last night that a bid had been made for Cox, who has plundered 17 goals this season, but refused to confirm the club or the fee involved.

He also reiterated his commitment to keep Cox at the County Ground – although admitted that if the right offer came along from a club at a higher level it would be difficult to stand in the ambitious striker's way.

Fitton said: "We have received an official bid but the figures and the identity of the club are not important. As it stands we are not soliciting bids for Simon and it would take a significantly higher offer than the one we have received to change our minds.

"We want to keep Simon at the club but we have to bear in mind that we also have a duty to our younger players. He is a player who has come here from Reading to kick-start his career and is probably capable of going on to play at a higher level.

"If a bid came in that suited Simon personally and was right for this club financially, we would obviously have to consider it."

Swindon boss Danny Wilson expects to sign a new centre-half this week.

With centre-back Patrick Kanyuka facing a ban for his straight red card at the Galpharm Stadium and Jerel Ifil on four bookings, a centre-back is a priority.

"In an ideal world we are looking for experience," said Wilson. "But we will have to see what is out there.

"We want an extrovert who will bring the others out of their shells."
