Swindon Town striker Billy Paynter faces a player who once scored the winning goal in a European Cup Winners' Cup final tonight.

But the big Liverpudlian is undaunted by the challenge of being marked by Bruno N'Gotty, formerly of Paris Saint Germain, Marseille, AC Milan and France.

N'Gotty, who is on loan at Hereford United from Leicester City, netted the winner for PSG against Rapid Vienna in the 1996 final.

But tonight's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at Edgar Street will not see Paynter face the most decorated player he has ever come up against.

Paynter recalled: "I played against a World Cup winner in Roberto Carlos in the Fenerbahce game in pre-season.

"I got his shirt after the game and that's not on E-Bay I can tell you!"

Paynter is full of respect for N'Gotty who could easily have taken the comfortable option of sitting out the rest of his Leicester contract after dropping out of the side.

"Fair play to him," said Paynter. "I don't know if he has found it hard, but if he is happy, fair play to him."

Paynter's battle with N'Gotty could be key to the outcome of the tie as the former Hull man set up all three of Simon Cox's hat-trick of goals in the 3-3 draw at Hartlepool on Friday.

"I don't think he has thanked me yet for getting the three assists!" joked Paynter.

"But he has done well. I am made up for him.

So does Paynter want Cox to return the favour and provide a trio of chances for him?

"It would be nice, yeah," he said. "Or just the one!"

"No, as long as the team wins is my main concern."

Paynter's former Hull City pals, who won the Championship play-off final against Bristol City back in May, have been bending his ear about Wembley.

"Playing there would be a nice bonus," he said.

"The chances to play at Wembley are slim unless you progress in your career.

"Even my mates have played there and it is not nice to take!"

Tonight's game is on familiar territory for the Robins as they drew 1-1 at Edgar Street in the league last month.

"We have played there before and we felt comfortable and we could have won the game," said Paynter.

"Hopefully we can go there with a bit of confidence and actually do the job.

"We look forward to it but it is a cup game and anything can happen."

Anything can happen. Swindon's goal in the 1-1 draw saw centre half Jerel Ifil crack a thunderous edge-of-the-box strike in off the crossbar.

"Does lightning strike twice?" said Paynter, smiling. "We will go there and we will take one off the backside as long as we get the win.

"I don't think their league form counts for much because it is a cup game."
