PARALYMPIC swimmer Kate Grey was guest of honour at her old school when she met students at an awards event.

Kate, 19, was a pupil at the Castle School in Thornbury and swam at the Beijing Paralympics last year.

She is currently studying for a coach education and sports development degree at the University of Bath.

Kate, of Tytherington, was two years old when her left hand was severed in a mincing machine.

But she was always keen on sport and went on to achieve a string of sporting successes at able-bodied and para level.

She received a Castle School Award when she was a student there and returned to speak to the current generation of winners.

Awards were presented for academic achievement but also for endeavour, services to the school and contributions to the school community.

Head teacher Melanie Warnes said: "We are very proud of these fine young people."
