Swain edges it with late show in angling match
Angling: The capture of a last-cast, six-pound carp gave Paul Swain a narrow victory in the Carpenters Arms 2000 AC match, fished at Cary Lake, Viaduct Fishery, Somerton.
The Patchway-based trade union officer, who is due to retire next week, fished a straight lead with hair rigged 8mm pellet at 30 metres off peg 86 on the far bank, and brought six carp weighing 58-14-0 to the scales.
He said: "I drew a good peg and even though I only caught one fish during the first two hours, I was confident that I could still win.
"The majority of the fish were in the middle of the lake and well out of my range. I continued to feed the occasional few pellets over the top of my bait, and by the start of the third hour the fish had moved closer and started to feed.
"I netted four carp around mid-match but the swim suddenly went dead again and my next and last fish came on the whistle about two hours later. By that time I judged several anglers to have reached the 50lb mark and the result could have gone any one of six ways."
The second best weight came from the Lodge Lake causeway and fell to Steve Vowles. He fished the same bait and method as the winner between 30 and 40 metres off peg 97 and all his fish came in the middle two hours.
Just 12oz separated third and fourth place. Paul Foxhall and Rich Jones fished the same pellet and waggler combination as Swain and Vowles and finished with 51-8-0 and 50-12-0 respectively from pegs 81 and 99.
Neil Carter was fifth. He also fished the most successful method of the day at peg 90, and included the top silverfish catch of 30-2-0 in his 49-12-0 total.
Result: 1, Paul Swain 58-14-0, peg 85; 2, Steve Vowles 53-4-0, peg 97; 3, Paul Foxhall 51-8-0, peg 81; 4, Rich Jones 50-12-0, peg 99; 5, Neil Carter 49-12-0, peg 90; 6, Rex Davies 48-12-0, peg 100. Silverfish: 1, Neil Carter 30-2-0.
Andy Wilson won the second round of the J Philips Cup match, fished on the Bristol Avon at St Anne's Park yet it was Tom Bailey who picked-up the silverware on aggregate.
Wilson prised a magnificent 9-5-0 of roach and dace from peg 22 with caster and maggot fished at full depth below a 'Topper' float at nine metres, while third-placed Bailey used the same tactics and baits to tempt a similar 5-14-0 from peg four.
Second place in round two was filled by Benny Caswell, who fished a 'Topper' float with maggot at one rod length off peg five for 2-9-0 of roach and dace, plus a brace of 2lb chub.
Result, rd II: 1, Andy Wilson 9-5-0, peg 22; 2, Benny Creswell 6-9-0, peg 5; 3, Tom Bailey 5-14-0, peg 4; 4, Bob Dark 5-10-0, peg 1; 5, John Gardner 3-4-0, peg 18. Tom Bailey 6-15-0 + 5-14-0 Total 12-13-0; Wilson 3-0-0 + 9-5-0 Total 12-5-0.
