There will also be a dance stage in Millennium Square and the usual maritime activities in Bristol's historic harbour.
There will also be plenty of live music, street artists and circus acts too.
Councillor Simon Cook, the council's executive member for culture, sport and capital programme, said: "We're delighted to be working with REM.
"The harbour festival is the city's best-loved event, with local residents and tens of thousands of visitors joining in the carnival atmosphere around the harbourside.
"The festival's three-year tender contract is a real demonstration of the council's continued commitment to supporting culture and performance arts in the city.
"I'm looking forward to seeing what new elements REM will bring to the festival and am sure 2013's event will be a summer treat to look forward to."
Mike Richmond of REM, added: "To host the Bristol Harbour Festival is a great privilege and an exciting challenge for everyone at REM.
"The three-year contract means we can plan ahead and build up the festival year-on-year.
"The harbour festival will still have all those elements that people have come to love – but there will be some surprises too.
"We are looking forward to the summer and will be cracking on with our ideas to deliver an amazing 2013 event."
Record numbers of around 300,000 people attended last year's festival, which coincided with a spell of hot weather.
It was deemed the most successful ever with 50,000 more people turning out than in 2011, which marked the 40th anniversary of the event.

“Great to see everything happening again in 2013 - at last Bristol is maintaining a profile- unlike efforts to build stadiums/transport links etc. The festival is a great showcase for a top european city - long may it continue !!”

“Were there any fireworks last year? I thought they'd cancelled them to keep costs down. I certainly don't remember there being any.”
