The Bristol Under-18 Football Combination began their defence of the Durnford Cup in spectacular fashion with a 6-0 victory over the Bridgwater League at Brislington FC.

The side had been dealt a blow before kick-off when Tom Ferris was declared unfit. But the squad responded superbly with a hat-trick by substitute Geraint Williams and further goals from Rayon McLean, Ed Freeman and Femi Balogun.

Ashley Knight set up five of the six goals, while full-backs Lee Chapman and Ashley Walker were always a threat on the offensive as Bristol progressed to a second-round tie away to the Weston-super-Mare League.

In the GFA Under-18 Youth Shield, Olveston United provided a real cup upset by overcoming Oldland Abbotonians 3-0. They took the lead when a Tom Brock shot was deflected to Sam Peplow, who finished neatly.

Rob Olive and Peplow were a constant threat and their link-up play led to Olive extending Olveston's lead with a deft finish that gave Oldland keeper Tom Read no chance.

When Peplow scored his second and Olveston's third before half-time they were almost out of sight.

Oldland's cause wasn't helped when they were reduced to 10 men in the second half due to an injury to Sam Lee and they did well to keep the score down to three goals.

Dan Cotterell's second-half goal for Mangotsfield was not enough to prevent them toppling out of the competition 2-1 against Stonehouse.

But there was delight for Winterbourne, who pipped St Vallier 4-2 with goals from Jacob Hobson, Dave Herbert (2) and Jensen Manning.

St Vallier finally found a way through after the keeper dropped the ball at substitute Phil Harrington's feet and he gratefully lifted it home in fine style on 80 minutes.

Seven minutes later, Jerb Hughes smashed the ball in from 25 yards for his 16th goal of the season to reduce the arrears further.

But despite a magnificent effort from Saints' striker Jason Barter, they could not find a way through again.

Injury-ravaged Stoke Lane, who finished the game with nine players due to further casualties, went out 2-0 at Thornbury Town.

In Division 1, Highridge thrashed Full Circle 12-0, with all the goals remarkably coming in the second half after a hard-fought and goalless opening period.

Luke Coggins led the charge with a four-timer, while Kalum Carter, Eugene Keary (2), Tommy Milkins, James Stadden (2), Aaron Mansfield and keeper Luke Thomas, who ventured out with two minutes left and managed to net his first goal for Highridge, completed the demolition.
