Thornbury Town's delighted boss Dave Lippiatt says ace striker Steve Rice sums up the spirit shown by his rejuvenated side.

Rice has struck seven goals in his last eight games to help elevate Town to mid-table status heading into tomorrow's home match with Hanham Athletic.

Said Lippiatt: "Steve raced straight from Bristol Airport after a holiday abroad to get to our match against Henbury last weekend. He got there in time to come on as a second-half sub and score with an exquisite 30-yard chip."

Thornbury won the game 4-2 and Lippiatt added: "Steve changed the game for us. He's certainly capable of playing at a higher level."

Frustrated Henbury manager Jairzinho Wright has warned his faltering team that they are playing for cup final places now, starting with tomorrow's visit to leaders Slimbridge, after back-to-back defeats wrecked their title chances. Henbury take on King's Stanley in the Les James Cup final on May 16.

Vice-chairman Simon Hartley will take temporary charge at AXA in the absence of boss Gavin Tufton, who is continuing his fight against a debilitating chest condition. AXA are at Tuffley Rovers tomorrow aiming to break into top-five contention.

Carmelo Micciche is urging his B&W Avonside team to ensure an encouraging few months of their maiden campaign at this level does not "go to waste" over their final five fixtures.

Mid-table Avonside go to Ellwood tomorrow seeking an overdue win following three defeats and a fighting 0-0 midweek draw against King's Stanley.

DRG Stapleton, whose 3-1 defeat by Bishop's Cleeve last weekend dropped them into the relegation places, entertain Highridge United.

Player-manager Matthew Webb is available to play after a lengthy ban as Patchway Town embark on the first of four successive home fixtures with the visit of Berkeley Town.
