Award winning Hobbs House Bakery will add another accolade to its collection after one of its loaves was judged the best in a search for Britain's top organic products.

The family-run business scooped the baked goods category in the Soil Association Organic Food Awards with its Wild White bread.

It was also highly commended for its Soda Seeds loaf – one of a range of speciality breads baked at the company's Chipping Sodbury headquarters.

A panel of experts made up of chefs, restaurateurs, food writers and other specialists said the winning loaf was "delicious, with a fresh taste of wheat and a fabulous boxy red crust".

Gardener Monty Don, president of the Bristol-based Soil Association, will present the award to Hobbs House at a ceremony in the city on Friday.

Tom Herbert, one of the directors of the bakery, will join other winners at Bordeaux Quay on the eve of the Soil Association Organic Fortnight and Food Festival to receive the award.

He said: "Wild White is a very crusty loaf that keeps incredibly well. Because of the long and slow process involved in making it, it also has an amazing flavour.

"It's very low in salt and is easy to digest, even for people with a wheat intolerance, and it's placed in cane baskets to rise in order to keep its shape."

Three generations are involved in the bakery, which employs about 120 staff.

It has shops in Chipping Sodbury, Tetbury and Nailsworth and also runs a wholesale business supplying many other shops.

The awards are in their 20th year and showcase the best of organic food and drink. This year 900 entries were received and tasted by the judges.

Monty said: "The awards represent not just the very best of British foods but are also a celebration of the finest food and ingredients anywhere in the world, so to present the awards is not only a privilege but a pleasure."

Other categories covered produce ranging from baby food, beer and biscuits to eggs, meat and vegetables.
