PUPILS, parents and teachers at a Downend school may have sung their way to a new world record.

They staged a relay singing of the National Anthem during St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Primary School's summer fair on Saturday in an attempt to break the current record for the most people singing in relay, which stood at 202.

Each participant had to sing one line, with the singers covering the first three verses in a loop.

A total of 212 people took part and organisers have sent their evidence off to Guinness World Records for the attempt to be verified as a record.

The National Anthem was chosen to tie in with the theme of the summer fair, Let's Celebrate Britain – but the British weather hampered the event.

School PTA member Shanta Hurford said: "It was tough trying to do it in a force ten gale with torrential rain but we gave it a really good go and lots of people said afterwards they had really enjoyed it."

The fair was held to raise money for the school, church and uniformed youngsters' groups.
