Streets are now strewn with litter

The Post

I DO not know how Gary Hopkins can say that he has saved £2million but services not will suffer. (Evening Post January 27) Well I am sorry to say that they already are suffering.

Since May Gurney took over the contract of road sweeping and litter bin emptying this service has severely deteriorated. When SITA had the contract the litter bins on Church Road, Redfield between Gilbert Road and Chalks Road were emptied on a daily basis, and the pavement cleaned, yet since May Gurney took over the said litter bins are virtually overflowing and the pavements are a disgrace. I am l 74 years old and I can still get out and about taking my dog for a walk, but I dread to think how some pensioners less able-bodied than myself manage. I took my dog out last Saturday morning and the whole of the pavement between Victoria Parade and Chalks Road was an utter disgrace. When I reached the bus shelter and litter bin outside the Aldi store, I had to walk in the road to avoid all the litter and glass that was spread all over the pavement. This is not an isolated incident, because I was on my way home from a meeting on Thursday (January 5) and noticed the litter bins were full to overflowing, these bins were still un-emptied when I went out with my dog on the Saturday morning (January 7).

May I suggest that Mr Hopkins does a walkabout of this area and sees for himself what we have to put up with, and we do not think that we are getting value for our council tax. If it was not for a few of us volunteer residents who go litter picking things would be a lot worse.

“The bin on Dighton St is constantly overflowing, hasn't been emptied in weeks but i don't only blame the council or May Gurney for this. Largely I blame the students from King Square Studios and Studios58 that are either too lazy or too stupid to use the huge industrial sized bins (6 in Studio58, 12 in King Square) provided for them and instead choose to dump their weekly rubbish on the pavement.
Every single weekend this has been happening, carrier bags full of rubbish slowly accumulating around the bin, attracting rats and seagulls and strewn across the road.”

“Bin day today in Fishponds (Monday) and I did notice paper and card from the recycling bins strewn about a bit after the lorry had gone past. The problem seems to be the recyclers not being able to get all the rubbish from the recycling bins into the lorry, and then not picking up whatever falls on the ground!

Not conclusive proof but I did think that May Gurney could have been more careful as I was picking it up!”

“Agreed to a point, Mr Mushroom. There's a perfectly accessible recycling centre in St Philips. However, If May Gurney are being paid to take trash away, then they should do it.”

“Why blame the Council or even May Gurney; it's not them dropping the litter or stuffing litter into already full bins? It's not that hard to take responsibility for your own mess.

In fact, why should I be expected to pay through my Council Tax for others' irresponsibility?”
