Stop Tesco's bid for stadium
I say no way to the proposed Tesco at Ashton Gate.
As a resident of Ashton/season ticket holder and shareholder at Bristol City, I say if Bristol City cannot raise the money to build a new stadium some other way then do not build the new stadium.
And for Peter Abraham to say that a superstore in that location would be ideal – he is talking out of his hat. Does he live around Ashton Gate, I say not – has he driven along Winterstoke Road of late? Seven days a week there are long hold-ups with the traffic etc. Building a supermarket of Tesco size with its lorry delivering and customers etc seven days a week, 24 hours a day, life would become intolerable for those living close to the store.
I don't want to see a new ground built in Long Ashton. To see the green fields disappear under concrete which are now looking good, would be a disaster. And this dream that people have been given for Bristol to stage games etc in 2018 World Cup is like Bristol City Council saying next year the people of Bristol will not have to pay a penny in council tax because we have got such a lot of money in a reserve fund. That's another story ('Why hasn't council spent this money') Post May 27. So for me, both are just dreams.
So Bristol City I say to you. Rebuild Ashton Gate, knock down both Williams stand and Wedlock stands. Build new double-decker stands etc. Build a new multi-storey car park behind the Wedlock stand and I am sure they could pack in 35,000 to 40,000 in the stadium this way. Anyhow, what is the use of a 40,000 stadium, City don't fill up the existing ground holding 19,000.
So come on Mr Lansdown, find some other way. You just sold many shares in your firm so I say to all the people in south Bristol: Put up the signs and barricades and protest. Say no to Tesco now, this dream must be put to rest. And for the city council to come up with an estimate of £100 million for the local economy if the World Cup comes to Bristol is absolute rubbish.
Stop Tesco at all costs.

“Malcolm, There is no way a Tesco Store would be any difference than having a 40,000 seater stadium at Ashton Gate! Plus do you really think a multi story car park behind the Wedlock would get planning approval!!
This article is a complete joke City don't need fans like you.”
