Stoke Lane end Saints' unbeaten league run
St Vallier's proud unbeaten league record ended as they were pipped 3-2 by Stoke Lane in an exciting game which was settled in the last 20 minutes.
With a strong wind behind them, Saints did the bulk of the attacking in the first half, with efforts from Jason Barter and new-boy Mitch Brooks going wide.
Their keeper Rich Sage had little to do except when he had to fish the ball out of his net following a mix-up between himself and Joe Durcan which allowed Tom Murrey to put Stoke Lane in front against the run of play.
Saints replied when Tom Loud took advantage of the wind to score from distance after 40 minutes, the Stoke Lane keeper misjudging the flight of the ball.
Sage had to make more saves in the second half as the pressure on the Saints goal grew and it was no surprise when Stoke Lane regained the lead via a 25-yard David Brown strike midway through the period.
Saints rallied and Jason Barter won and converted a penalty on 85 minutes to level things up – and at that point the game looked destined for a draw.
But, with three minutes to go, Stoke Lane swept downfield and grabbed a deserved winner through Murrey.
Jake Hynam hit a hat-trick as Sartan United lifted themselves two places up the table with a 6-4 victory over Cheddar Albion, whose Mat Day also scored three goals.
United established a three-goal lead before half-time and they made it 4-0 early in the second period.
After Cheddar had seen a 'goal' wiped out for offside, Sartan extended their lead to 5-0 and Cheddar looked dead and buried.
Yet the last 30 minutes proved a totally different game as the visitors rallied to score three quickfire goals.
Sartan hit back by adding a sixth but spirited Cheddar had the last word by netting a fourth.
Danny Hennessey, Jake Hill and Jamie Godfrey were the other Sartan marksman, while Harry Brunsdon was also on target for Albion.
Almondsbury accepted an invitation to switch their fixture with scheduled hosts Stonehouse to their ground due to a frozen pitch – and took full advantage by winning 5-1.
In doing so, they extended their unbeaten run in the league to 11 games thanks to a hat-trick from Ashley Knight and two goals from Shaun Coles.
Despite a spirited effort from Stonehouse, Almondsbury were able to maintain top spot thanks largely to an organised back line of Nick Gray, Luke Baker, Alex Tanner and Josh Graham.
Knight's second goal for Almonds – a solo effort ending in a neat chip over the keeper – laid the platform for the home side to take control of the game.
Coles's two goals were neatly taken after some good inter-passing and approach play, while Nathan Tumbridge and Sam Roberts, who were introduced early in the second half, showed up well in midfield.
