Steve Webb is on a different planet
AS a much vilified public sector worker (35 years service at Southmead Hospital as a biomedical scientist) I am outraged that Steve Webb is making plans regarding my NHS pension lump sum. When I reach 40 years service, my 'gold-plated' pension will pay me approximately £10,000 per annum, with a lump sum of £25,000, not forgetting that I now have to wait until I am 66 years old to get my state pension.
On what planet is Steve Webb living, where that £25,000 would be excess to requirements? I can assure him that it will also be invested to generate more income, at least until I finally get my state pension. I agree that it's not looking like my children, aged 24 and 21, are soon going into a home of their own. Suggesting to them that they can have my pension lump-sum is presumptive and ignorant about how ordinary people are managing in these difficult times.
