OK, I'm going to admit to a vested interest in Grounded café in Redfield. I love it – it's my local and I've been coming here since it opened.

Once a card and gift shop Grounded opened it's doors back in 2007 and hasn't looked back since – and to be honest neither has Church Road. It's opening had a real knock-on effect on the area and, while other enterprises have come and gone, Grounded – and the community which has built around it – has gone on to help revitalise the area.

The café has dark walls, fireplaces, counters made of recycled doors and wooden floorboards – it's a formula but one that works. Relaxed enough for breakfast, chic enough for a night out.

There's live music every week, art by local photographers and artists hang on the walls and it has a lovely decked garden which when (or rather if) the sun shines again is a glorious sun trap.

In the interest of research I visited twice last week – for both lunch and dinner. For lunch my dish of choice – baked sweet potatoes with roasted Mediterranean vegetables, hummus and sunflower seeds was - quell horreur - sold out! So after much debate I settles on a goats cheese panini(£4.95) and a bowl of chips. Now you can't go wrong (or can you?) with such a staple as a panini and Grounded didn't, but still I hankered after my sweet potato which is sensational.

Later in the week and I visited with the kids who were desperate –  as kids are - for pizza. Grounded has developed a bit of a reputation for pizza - they don't do the doughy creations found in certain establishments. These are made from genuine Italian cheese, flour and meats. Thin and crispy with a creative and contemporary choice of toppings.

Being traditionalists in this family however we ordered the Octopus garden (fruits de mer) for the boys and a Sgt.pepperoni for the girls (£11.25/£10.25 for the 12" £13.25/£12.25 for a 14"). We started with a pizza base garlic bread which was hot, buttery and very garlicky. The pizzas were almost perfect – home-made tomato sauce with fresh oregano gave them just the right authentic taste of Italy. The boys wanted a few more mussels and squid on their pizza – but that's boys for you!

While we were feasting school friends came over, mums gossipped and the early evening professional crowd were sitting down for tapas. That's really what makes Grounded tick - it's the heart of our community, sit here long enough and you'll bump into everyone you know at some point
