St Vallier Under-13s ran out comfortable winners in a match that was significantly influenced by the elements.

Yet for the first 35 minutes a spirited Lockleaze side defied their lowly league position as they took a deserved 2-1 lead into the half-time break thanks to goals from Mason O'Neill and Rhys Kelly.

However, it was a different story in the second half as the home team, with a driving wind at their backs, completely dominated play, firing in six goals without reply through Luke Prosser (2), Tom Hiam (2), Steph Button, and Josh Uhlyk, who added to his first-half score.

Both teams struggled to come to terms with the strong wind in the opening 10 minutes. Lockleaze had slightly more of the ball but there were only half-chances for Saints' Uhlyk and Lockleaze's Jake Stone.

Saints found it difficult to break out of their own half, but when they eventually did a strong run and shot from Connor Dunne might have opened the scoring had it not been for a fantastic block tackle by Hever Kader.

At the other end, Curtis Mitchell and O'Neill combined well to put the latter through on goal but his powerful shot sailed over the bar.

At least both teams had now got to grips with the conditions and the quality of play and goalmouth action improved considerably. Prosser and Javare Blackman were battling manfully in midfield for Saints, while Lockleaze duo O'Neill and Harris were proving a handful for the home defence.

Midway through the half, Lockleaze carved open the Saints defence as Jordan Burke and O'Neill tore down the right, but when the ball was squared to Mitchell in the box he could only shoot tamely at keeper Marco Labruna.

Saints countered with Dunne playing Uhlyk in behind the defence. He drove towards goal and shrugged off a challenge before unleashing a stinging drive, but the ball cannoned off the bar and was scrambled clear.

Two minutes later, Burke and Rhys Kelly combined well to create an opening for Lockleaze's Mitchell Harris, but just as he was about to shoot Bradley Sanders flew in with a goal-saving tackle.

Lockleaze's breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when Harris picked up a poor goal-kick and played in O'Neill, who strode into the box before shooting across the keeper and into the bottom corner.

Two minutes later it was 2-0. More good work from O'Neill down the right ended with a good catch from Labruna, but the keeper's clearance into the wind from the edge of his box only reached Lockleaze's Kelly, who immediately lofted the ball back over the stranded keeper's head and into the empty net.

Saints reduced the deficit almost immediately following more good midfield work from Dunne. He threaded a delightful ball through to Uhlyk, who rifled the ball into the roof of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.

There were further efforts from Uhlyk and Tom Hiam as Saints started to raise their game, but Kevin Agordorky continued to stand strong for Lockleaze. At the other end, O'Neill went on a storming run past two defenders and into the box only to shoot straight at Labruna.

Saints laid siege to the Lockleaze goal at the start of the second half and the visitors simply could not get out of their own territory. Every clearance seemed to fall to Hiam, who had adopted a shoot-on-sight policy, and Prosser, Dunne and Blackman were picking up everything in midfield.

The equaliser came when Hiam intelligently let the ball go across his body on the edge of the box before turning and blasting it into the roof of the net.

Rian Byrne pulled off two blinding one-handed saves to keep his team on level terms but the inevitable third goal for Saints came when Blackman drove into the box and shot under the keeper from a tight angle. The ball was probably going in but skipper Prosser was on hand to make sure as he tapped it into the empty net.

Another fabulous diving one-handed save by Byrne from Uhlyk was followed by a great reaction save from a Hiam piledriver, but on this occasion the rebound fell to a grateful Button, who steered the ball home to make it 4-2.

A minute later it was 5-2. Uhlyk drove into the box and, although Byrne managed to save bravely at his feet, the loose ball fell for Hiam to blast into the empty net. The sixth goal came courtesy of a well-despatched Uhlyk penalty.

The infringement occurred after Stone made a terrific goal-line clearance to deny Prosser a headed goal. The loose ball was fired back into the Lockleaze box and midfielder Ronald Ngandu pulled off a save that Byrne would have been proud of.

Saints kept up the relentless pressure and the final goal came towards the end from Prosser, who picked up a poor clearance from the Lockleaze keeper and gratefully tucked it into the empty net.

St Vallier: Marco Labruna, Mitch Williams, Bradley Sanders, George Tovey, Javare Blackman, Steph Button, Luke Prosser, Connor Dunne, Cameron Meaker, Warren Monaghan, Tom Hiam, Josh Uhlyk.

Lockleaze Utd: Rian Byrne, Rhys Kelly, Hever Kader, Kevin Agordorky, Ronald Ngandu, Jake Stone, Mitchell Harris, Jahan Haddimoold, Jordan Mitchell, Jordan Burke, Curtis Mitchell, Mason O'Neill.

“It's a darn shame that someone like Rian Byrne, with apparent talent, posts filth on other websites. Not a very nice representation of players.
