Bristol primary school scraps building plan
Plans to move temporary buildings to a nearby playing field while work is carried out to rebuild Staple Hill Primary School have been scrapped.
South Gloucestershire Council had proposed to move the nursery buildings from the school site in Page Road to the school's playing field for three years and create a new access to them from Midland Road.
-
They were due to be moved as part of the project to rebuild the primary school at a cost of more than £7 million.
But residents living in Midland Road complained the move would create extra traffic on a street already used as a rat run and create parking problems.
Retired wood machinist Michael Tilling, 65, and his wife Margaret, 75, a retired supermarket worker, who live next door to the playing field in Midland Road, were concerned about the plans.
Mr Tilling said: "The buildings being there wouldn't have bothered me, it would have been the traffic problems they would have caused.
"We didn't know how often parents were going to be bringing their children to the nursery buildings and whether they would end up parking their cars in the road out the front.
"Sometimes when the dust cart comes up here they already have problems getting through. We felt it was the wrong place for it and they said it would only be there for three years, but that could have ended up being four or five years.
"The road is already used as a shortcut between Soundwell Road and Staple Hill High Street."
South Gloucestershire Council decided to ditch the plans after two consultation meetings were held with residents.
Sarah Hudspith, spokeswoman for the authority, said alternative arrangements had not been decided.
She said: "Following two public consultations held last week, the council is investigating options which will not require relocation of the temporary buildings on the playing field.
"Future meetings with stakeholders will agree on the way forward and therefore further information about the alternatives is not presently available. A date has not yet been fixed for work to start."
Work is due to commence on site during 2010/11 and the school, which celebrated its centenary in 2006, will provide places for 315 pupils.
The Staple Hill SureStart children's centre, where parents-to-be and families with young children can get advice, information and support, will also be moved to the premises.
The Victorian school buildings will not be demolished as part of the project but one of the buildings is expected to be refurbished to accommodate the children's centre.
