A football club has kicked off the new season in style – with brand new changing room facilities.

St Georges Easton-in-Gordano Football Club has been playing in the village since 1924 from the sports field next to St George's Church.

But over the years their changing room facilities in old portacabins have become in need of replacement.

A fundraising appeal kicked off six years ago to raise the cash.

Although the club applied to the Football Foundation for funding, no money was forthcoming.

After years of events including sponsored bike rides and cooking evenings, the club raised £20,000.

Work started on the new facilities, which include home and away team changing rooms and showers, a disabled toilet and small meeting room, earlier this year.

An official opening, attended by former Bristol Rovers manager Ian Holloway, players and supporters, is planned for next month.

Club secretary and treasurer, Glenis Jones, said the new changing facilities had made a real difference.

Mrs Jones said: "It has been a lot of hard work to raise the money for the new changing rooms but we have had a fantastic amount of support from the local community.

"Club members have been busy over the past few weeks, painting the building and putting the final touches to it."
