St Aldhelms book quarter-final place in GFA Senior Amateur Cup
St Aldhelms went through to the quarter-finals of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup with a 4-0 victory over St Nicholas Wanderers.
Graham Farrell and Richard Griffiths gave them a 2-0 half-time lead, Bradley Dunne added a third straight after the restart and joint player-manager Jon Berry rounded off the scoring in the last minute.
Tom Windows, St Aldhelms' joint manager, said: "That was the best we've played this season. We knew Nicholas Wanderers are a good side and we had to be top drawer to beat them today."
St Aldhelms were outstanding They were the best team I've seen this year, experienced and well organised with a good mix of pace and power. All of their midfielders got stuck in and were too fast and strong for Wanderers to cope with.
Even so, Wanderers had the better of the first 15 minutes, creating two good chances. The first came when St Aldhelms keeper Stuart Jones came out to clear the ball and missed it, presenting Jon Scrase with an open goal, but a sensational last-ditch challenge from the outstanding Edward Cockle kept the scores even.
Minutes later, Cockle produced another moment of brilliance sliding bravely to block a Scott Oakley shot 10 yards from goal.
Despite the early scares, St Aldhelms moved through the gears and dominated the remainder of the half. They played some good passing football and created a number of chances.
Tyronne McNeeley had a header cleared off the line from a Berry corner and they were denied again when Paul Gardner's shot from outside the penalty area was scrambled clear with the home side claiming that the ball had crossed the line.
The deadlock was finally broken when Farrell met a Berry corner at the near post and his effort deflected in off a Wanderers defender.
The second goal was a great effort from Griffiths. After playing a one-two with strike partner Gary Warren, Griffiths showed good pace and desire to get to the ball first before unleashing a left-footed 20-yard thunderbolt into the top corner of the net.
St Aldhelms could have had a third when Farrell picked out McNeeley on the right wing with a stunning crossfield pass. McNeeley moved into the area but fired wide of goal.
The third goal immediately after the break followed another great move. Farrell found Gardner on the left wing and the ball was laid back to Dunne, who struck a first-time shot past helpless Wanderers keeper Richard Guest.
After this Wanderers came into the game and enjoyed more possession. By this time, however, St Aldhelms knew they had the game won and were happy to sit back and settle for what they had.
The powerful home defence denied the visitors a decent chance and St Aldhelms added a fourth for good measure in stoppage time.
Berry received the ball outside the box and showed good feet to move past his marker before rifling the ball into the top right corner of the net.
